Why should I become a member? -the pluses & bouquets

Do you have a knack of doing something for the benefit of college?

Does the alluded state of affairs of our college annoy you too?
Do you think that the connectivity of AITians is lopsided?
Do you agree that most of the events hosted in our college are not successful because they go away without active participation and not to mention unnoticed?
Do you feel that Orkut,Facebook,Myspace et al lacks the professional touch and moderation to give space to a college community?
Do you feel that there is not a good interaction amongst the faculty, students and alumni of AIT?

If your answer to the above all is no,then stop reading and move on.Nothing to see here.

However,if your answer is yes, then this site is the figment solution.

With 3,130,000 broadband connections as per TRAI as of Mar'08 and 4 crore Indians online as per Juxt Consult India Online, this is the era when an organisation can't eschew a website of its own.A web portal,an effective platform is almost mandatory for a professional institute to establish better communication and transfer of ideas & leads amongst the faculty, students and alumni for personal and institute's betterment.Since everyone's on the Internet and the number is growing day by day,the website can serve well to let the world know about its progress and latest happenings.

Services to be met by this site:

Personalized e-mail addresses at college domain for life.
Student and faculty directory with the provision of publishing contacts at your consent.
Storage space of 7 GB for inbox and 10 GB for sites per user and still growing. This is what not available to students of even reputed institutes like IIT,DCE,NSIT,NITs,IIMs etc...
Most powerful & flexible collaboration services.Yes,it's not just a subjective statement. The site is powered by the likes of Google calender,Google docs & Google startpage.Belonging to the Google generation,it is the name which we have reckoned with time & again to get our schooling & graduation done without those twinkle twinkle little stars :-)
No software required. No hardware range to buy.No installation servicing & OS upgrades.Everything runs off the web browser.
Collaborate on projects, workshops & assignments with friends & faculty from the comfort of home or college's internet lab or net enabled mobiles.
Ever felt galling by the 1024 char limit of orkut(like me)? Now you can bounce off your ideas banked upon by customizable tools & content on your own site.Let people have easy access to you & what your ideas offer.
Promote with newsletters, images & fliers to let people know if you have to offer similar to the thing required by them.Restrict the content to whom you want to show,to either the whole world or just your prospective contacts.Easily editable.Immediate result. It's like having a brochure online.
You'll have full control over your data.Share your data with whom you want.Auto saving.Keep your data as long as you want.It is safely chained.
SAML 2 single sign-on enabled. No need to multiple sign in or re-authenticate to access various services.
No annoying spyware, spams, ads & pop-ups.Let matrimonials & classifieds not bother to deviate your attention while you work :-)
RESTy/XML API integration.Interact in real time for better learning and teaching as a team.
Plays well with bandwidth considerations.Don't worry about the uptime of your services.
Google security & compliance using Postini.Demographic & Personal Information (FERPA) not delivered by email.
Access your documents from anywhere.Get them printed or forwarded whenever you need. They are stored on the Google server. No need to burn CD/DVDs or rush with flash drives to make files on the practical exam day.I still carry my friend's pen drive used in last sem pracs to make file :-)
Plan out for the very first movie show at V3S on Saturday! Get the ratings of latest releases, calculated as an average of all leading tabloids, the same night on the site.No need to wait for the newspapers next morning.
Surf through latest news or technology articles while checking mails.Take part in discussions or test your knowledge with the offered Quizzes.
Cast your opinions at the Polls.Play a host of flash games while you are anchored at the site.
Chat with buddies or update your courses from the student resources.Publish as your work & projects as student research page.Publish your resumes online.Make student clubs and societies and participate in their activities.Create financial statements, plans & forms to gather information or to do a survey.
Since we are the domain owners and administrators,we can restrict, suspend & decide who joins in.So no fake cool dude or magic girl profiles to bug you(personal experience) :-)
Has an equivalent for most common tools.Easy to use.For example,
this presentation. Its original draft was made using Google Docs. This is the simplest of all viz. MS office,Star office,Open office,i work,K office,G office,Thinkfree office,Ajax write,Goowy,Basecamp et al

Answering my first question, since we have purchased the domain & its managing services in partnership with Google Inc. & as you know Google is a Dot-com company,it will monitor our site.If we manage to achieve a good level of usage and utilization by our college's students base by 28th February,2009,the name of our college will be published on the Google's website. What more for our college's publicity could you ask for ?

Merge fun with work

What possible alibis could I have to not join? -the pitfalls and brickbats

You really don't want to do anything for your college.Consolidation of efforts or contribution is something still alien to you.
You are incapable of learning anything new.
You do not care about stability and security.
Such an amazing independence without any cost on privacy infringement is really not digestible to you.
You love to waste time using tools that makes no sense or you have nothing better to do than digging out from the spams through your inbox to find your real mail.
You are hesitant to see things working fast without any red tape. You love to spring slowly.
You prefer pirated or costly propriety software(though the later is highly unlikely) over free and open source software.
You don't like to expand the horizon of your skill set.You think that everyone should wear the same set of clothes, drive the same car, read the same books and use the same tools(read software).
The very idea of fighting viruses, spams and pop-ups is extremely thrilling for you.You enjoy the challenge.
You believe that the next patch of your software will solve all your problems. So you would prefer gloated by it rather than be part of a dynamic approach.
You think that Bill Gates or Steve Jobs still need your money.

If your reason(s) confine till the penultimate one and that our offering does not even allude you of the benefits let alone provide an insight, nothing can!

However,if it is the last one, please pass your bucks to me! I am scrimping :-)

What should I do next?
